The Skinny on Being Beautiful

Excerpt from Voices:
"I watched a beauty contest on TV when I was about 11. I remember feeling sorry for the girls walking around in bikinis being leered at by men old enough to be their grandfathers. I've never watched one since.

What message does this sort of competition send to young girls?

Yes, they disguise what is just an excuse to look at "girls" in next to nothing, as a humanitarian exercise: "I love puppies, children and want world peace."

And yes, Miss Universe probably goes around the world doing good deeds, but what does that teach young girls? Only beautiful girl in a bikini can achieve world peace?

Angan dan Harapan

Aku tukil dari blog seorang insan yang dirundung kesepian dan kesedihan:
Angan dan Harapan
11 purnama t'lah berlalu
angan dan harapan semakin pudar
27 purnama hati mereka t'lah berpaut
angan dan harapanku yang semakin kalut
semula kuhamparkan angan sebesar laut
kini asaku belum juga terbalut
semula anganku pada si zamrut
dapat memagut sibijak
semula harapku pada sibijak
dapat meragut zamrut secara bijak
namun....
harapan dan kenyataan
t'lah memagutku dengan telak
sibijak tak pernah berlaku bijak
yang terselak hanyalah sikap pembajak
yang seakan memijak-mijak
11 purnama t'lah berlalu
mulutku semakin bisu
rinduku tetap menggebu
hatiku semakin beku
anganku tak pernah lesu
harapanku semakin buntu
hanya do'aku senantiasa bertalu
Ya Allah kuatkanlah aku
Bukalah mata si zamrut
besarkanlah hati sibijak

Anakku Yang Pertama

Anakku Yang Pertama
Kini aku gembira
Yang ku tunggu dah tiba
Anakku lahir sudah
Hai anakku yang pertama

Sungguh cantik rupanya
Mirip wajah ibunya
Betapa bahagia
Hai dengan kehadirannya

chorus:
Kau kujadikan raja
Di dalam rumahtangga
Ku curahkan semua
Hanya untuk mu sayang

Buah hati wahai permata
Besarlah kau segera
Anakku yang pertama
Riang tiada terkira
Hapus segala duka
Bila ku memandangnya
Hai anakku yang pertama

It's Never Too Late

By: Dr James Dobson
I'm sure you've noticed that the world seems to worship youth and fears getting old. But there was a time when age was associated with wisdom and experience. In fact, some of the greatest accomplishments in history came very late in life.

Immanuel Kant wrote on of his best philosophical works at the age of 74. Verdi penned his classic "Ave Maria" at 85. Alfred Lord Tennyson was 80 when he wrote "Crossing the Bar". Michelangelo was 87 when he completed "The Pieta", his greatest work of art. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes set down some of his most brilliant opinions at the age of 90. Titian painted his famous "Battle of Lepanto" at the age of 98. And Ronald Reagan was the powerful man in the world at 75. Generally speaking, older people today are healthier than ever before and anything that squanders their talents is foolish. And while we're on the subject, it bugs me a little that television advertisers are only interested in the younger set. Isn't a tube of toothpaste sold to an 80-year old just as profitable as one pitched to a child?

This notion that life should be winding down at 50 or 60 years of age is crazy. I'll bet the baby-boomers agree with me. They set the world on its ear when they were kids. They're not going to go limping off the stage before they absolutely must, nor should you or I.

Cost of Being a Parent

"Excerpt by Dr James Dobson"

Considering how expensive and difficult it is to be a good parent, many people wonder these days why anyone would want to even have children. I'm reminded of a woman who boarded a Los Angeles bus a few years ago and sat in the seat behind me. Her hair was a mess and the black circles under her eyes revealed a state of utter exhaustion. As she stumbled past me with seven rambunctious yuoungsters I asked, "Do all those children belong to you? Or is this some kind of picnic?" She looked at me through squinted eyes and said, "They're mine and believe me it's no picnic". The woman is right. Parenthood is an assignment that demands everything we can give it. And to do the job right requires some sacrifice and maybe even a few tears. And yet nothing worth having comes cheap. Speaking as a father, there's never been a greater moment in my life than when i gazed into the eyes of my newborn daughter and then five years later, my son. What could be more exciting than seeing those tiny human beings begin to blossom, grow, learn and love. And what reward ca be more meaningful than having my little boy or girl climb onto my lap, hug my neck and whsper "I love you, Daddy". Yes, children are expensive, but they're certainly worth what they cost us.

A Level Result 2007

2nd March 2007 Friday (3.30pm)- a date to be remembered for the rest of my life.....was walking aimlessly at Ikea Tampines after sent my daughter to Meridian JC to collect her A level result. I was comtemplating to answer the call when it rang. Oh oh it is my little mermaid...i was stunned for a split second. Stay calm....when i heard she is crying on the other line....mummy mummy mummy mummy for pretty 5 seconds....i have good news for you!! Phew!! what a relief! Whatever grade that she might get, truthfully i have no idea about ranking, what i only knew is as long as you are eligible to enter NUS, Alhamdullillah.

Her scores for some people is nothing to be proud of, but i as her mother, I am very proud of her for her achievements by looking back how hard she work and prepare for the exam. An A for her Mathematics, A for her Chemistry, C for her Biology and C for her General Paper.

i am ANGRY!!

Get in touch with my long lost friend. There are one thousand and one things to talk about. She has two daughters; the elder is the same age as mine, and the younger who just turned 16 last month. Pheww we were on the phone for more than an hour long till my ear burnt not of the heat, but of her words. Till todate, I just can’t come to term how she could as an adult or as to say as a senior citizen could do what she had done. She proudly boasted of her younger daughter having a boyfriend and she proudly told me that she did went out with her daughter and her boyfriend for dinner and get the boy to pay for it. How can she swallow the food? That young punk is still serving N.S. and I am sure she is aware of how much N.S. recruit’s allowance. Pittance man!! If I am the boy’s mother and I come to know about it, I am for sure will go hell with the lady who get my son to pay for their dinner. That was the time I hung up on her giving lame excuses. Oh God! Please save me from doing what my friend had done! Amin

Puteri Gunung Ledang Muzikal

That is Adlin Aman Ramlie as Sultan Mahmud of Malacca in Puteri Gunung Ledang Muzikal.
Managed to catch the theatre show at Esplanade 26th November 2006. This is my very first theatre show in my entire life and surprising.....this was indeed a magnificent production and am awed by the whole magical experience! Kudos to all the personnels involved in such a fantastic production. Too bad, managed to catch
a photo with 'Malacca Sultan'. I can understand the casts need to rest so, we were ushered away too fast. Hahaha i did admit that i accidentally dozed off during Gusti Putri Retno Adjeng Dumilah and Hang Tuah sang at the waterfall....i dont know, maybe too tired after attending two weddings on that day. Anyway...i enjoyed the show. Will watch it again for second round if it is shown again here. Bravooooo!!!!

No Place To Hide

By: Dr James Dobson
Have you ever fantasised about running away from all the pressure and stress of today's high-tech world? Surely there's a place somewhere on the globe where the pace is slower and the living is easy. Why don't we just pack up and transplant ourselves there - lock, stock, and family dog? That was precisely the dream that motivated a man and woman back in 1940 to move to an island in the Coral Sea called Guadalcanal. But two years later, they had World War II in their front yard, and that wasn't exactly what they had in mind. Well, they just chose the wrong place. How about moving to a small island in the Caribbean, south of Cuba, called Grand Cayman? Vacationers to this resort say that it's the closest thing to paradise on earth. The 6,000 residents pay no taxes. The water around them is calm and warm, and there are orchids growing everywhere.Sounds good, doesn't it? But hand on for a minute. Recent medical studies revealed that the two major ailments suffered by the citizens of Grand Cayman are hypertension and anxiety neuroses. Life on a tropical beach can be tough, it appears.Could it be that the stresses and pressures with which we struggle actually come from within, and that they will plague us no matter where we live until we learn to deal with circumstances as they are? We might as well stay and bloom where we're planted, because there's simply no place to hide.

Is Motherhood Boring?

By: Dr James Dobson
When I hear someone comment that being a mother and homemaker is boring, I have a simple response: You're right!
The truth is, almost any occupation you can name - from a telephone operator to a medical pathologist, an attorney or dentist - involves a long hours of tedious activity.
Few of us enjoy heart-thumping excitement each moment of our professional lives. I once stayed in a hotel room right next to the room of a famous cellist that was performing in a classical concert that evening. I could hear him through the walls as he practised hour after hour. He didn't play beautiful symphonic renditions; he repeated scales, runs and exercises, over and over and over. Believe me! This practice began early in the morning and continued until the time of his concert. As he strolled onto the stage that night, I'm sure many in the audience thought to themselves, "What a glamorous life!" Some glamour! I happen to know he spent the entire day in his lonely hotel room in the company of his cello.
No, I doubt that the job of being a mother and homemaker is more boring than most other jobs, particularly if a woman refuses to be isolated from adult contact. But regarding the importance of the assignment, no job can compete with the satisfaction of shaping and moulding, and guiding a new human being.

Tim and Christine Burke

By: Dr James Dobson
What would you be willing to give up for your family?
Your hopes, your dreams, your career, your bank account?
Well, I know a man who gave up all of that and more.
In 1985, Tim Burke saw his boyhood baseball dream come true the day he signed on to pitch for the Montreal Expos. After four years in the minors, he was finally going to get a chance to play in the big leagues. And he quickly proved to be worth his salt, setting an all-time record for most relief appearances by a rookie player. But along the way, Tim and his wife, Christine, had adopted four children with very special needs - two daughters from South Korea, a handicapped son from Guatemala, and another son from Vietnam. All the children were born with very serious illnesses or defects. Neither Tim nor Christine were prepared for the tremendous demands such a family would bring. And with gruelling schedule of major-league baseball, Tim was seldom around to help. So in 1993, only three months after signing a $600,000 contract with the Cincinnati Reds, he decided to retire. When pressed by reporters to explain this unbelievable decision, he simply said, "Baseball is going to to do just fine without me. But I'm the only father my children have."
Heroes are in short supply these days, but I'm happy to say that I've met one of them.
